The development and effective transfer of
a cost effective, sustainable, non-pesticide based IPM technology for use in
eggplant to farmers in South Asia has been recognised by the Ryutaro Hashimoto
APFED Award 2008 Silver Prize for Good Practice given to Dr S. N. Alam,
Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute, at a recent award ceremony.
This
achievement was the culmination of several research programmes funded by the
Department for International Development, UK, European Commission and latterly
the Government of Bangladesh.

Ecologically-based rodent management |
|
Written by Tim Chancellor

 |
Rodents cause multiple problems for people in rural areas. They
destroy crops, contaminate stored food, damage buildings and
possessions and spread diseases. Unfortunately it is extremely
difficult to control rodents effectively. As a result, people are
often discouraged and come to accept the adverse impacts of rodent
activity.
In recent years rodent control has been largely based on the use of
acute poisons. However, rodenticides have several disadvantages and
researchers have demonstrated that an ecologically-based rodent
management (EBRM) strategy is more sustainable.
|
|
EBRM may be cheaper
than poisons in the long-run and it is also more
environmentally-friendly. Dr Steve Belmain of the Natural Resources
Institute (UK) has published an article on EBRM in the latest issue of
the LEISA magazine (December 2007) which focuses on ecological pest
management. He describes the collaboration between NRI, the
Comilla-based NGO Association for Integrated Development, the
Bangladesh Rice Research Institute, and CSIRO in Australia.

|
Written by Jhulan Ghose & Sanghamitra Majumdar

Thursday, 22 November 2007 |
|
Telecentre on Wheels is a new project of Change Initiatives with the
support of UNESCO and WBREDA (West Bengal
Renewable Energy Development Agency) that was launched
on November 6, 2007 at Ghoragacha in West Bengal's Nadia district.
|
|
|
|
Telecentre on Wheels (TOW) will cover 4 villages:
Ghoragacha, Madandanga, Kantabelia and Teligacha. Selected community members
will be given training on basic computing so that they can access information
in the local language, Bengali, from the computer in the areas of health,
education, agriculture, human right and law, and build a group of e-literate
volunteers from each village. They can also post questions on forum and the
volunteers will try to address the queries.
